As a newborn photographer, there’s nothing quite as delightful as capturing those precious moments of a newborn peacefully asleep. However, every now and then, I encounter a little one who seems determined to stay wide awake throughout their session. When faced with this challenge, I’ve learned to adapt and find creative solutions to ensure a successful session. Below you will find a few of my tips and tricks for working with an awake baby.
First and foremost, I always approach each newborn session with patience and flexibility. Babies are unpredictable, and it’s important to go with the flow and embrace whatever mood they’re in. If a baby is wide awake and alert, I’ll begin the session by capturing some beautiful awake shots. These images can be just as precious as those of a sleeping baby and often showcase their unique personality and expressions.
To help encourage sleep, I create a warm and cozy environment in my studio. To do this I use soft blankets, soothing white noise, and gentle rocking or swaying motions. A good feed can also help!! I utilize various posing techniques that mimic the comfort and security of being in the womb, such as wrapping the baby snugly or gently placing them in a comfortable position.
If the baby still refuses to sleep, I remain calm and patient, allowing them plenty of time to relax and settle into a comfortable state. Sometimes all it takes is a little extra time and patience to lull them into a peaceful slumber.
what if baby just won’t sleep no matter what…
In some cases, a baby may simply not be ready to sleep during their session, and that’s okay too. I always prioritize the safety and comfort of the baby above all else, and if they’re content and alert, we can still capture beautiful images that celebrate their unique personality and charm.
At the end of the day, flexibility, patience, and creativity are key tips and tricks for photographers when working with newborns who won’t sleep. By remaining calm and adaptable, I’m able to create a relaxed and enjoyable experience for both the baby and their family, resulting in timeless photographs that will be treasured for years to come.
